Barbarossa and The Lost Corsairs #1

This is the first comic put out by the new comic company Kandora Publishing and if it is any sign of what's to come this is a company that is soon to make its mark in the industry. When Cross Gen went under it took some genres out of mainstream comics that only they were publishing on a monthly basis. One of those titles that made such a splash and has been greatly missed, at least by me, was El Cazador. Well after reading the first issue of Barbarossa and the Lost Corsairs I think I have found my new fix of high sea adventure.

In this first issue Barbarossa "kidnaps" Julia the daughter of Count Rudolfo of Fondi. While being chased by the Counts fleet they run headlong into a storm. Where they are sucked into a whirlpool and end up in an extra dimensional realm.

The script of writer Brian Augustyn and the layouts of artist H. S. Park give this book the feel of a story straight out of "The Voyages of Sinbad. The constant action in this book makes the 32 pages of story go by at what seems like a rapid pace but leaves you feeling fulfilled at the end and that it was well worth the $3.50 price tag. I am looking forward to the second issue and would like to congratulate Kandora Publishing on an awesome first issue. For more information on Kandora Publishing go to KandoraPublishing.com.

Toxin #1

This is a six issue mini series that is a tie-in to The New Avengers. Toxin is the offspring of the symbiotic Carnage who has taken New York City police officer Pat Mulligan as its host (for more information on Toxin see either Venom vs Carnage or The Official handbook of The Marvel Universe: Spider-Man 2005).

In this issue Toxin, who is still trying to accept what has happened to him and to learn his new powers, is helping in the recapturing of the escapees from the Raft by going after King Cobra.

Peter Milligan does a very good job this book. The narrative and dialogue between Pat and his symbiote give some insight to both Pat's personality and their relationship. I was quite happy with the art of Darick Robertson until he got to the Razorfist interlude where it seems to go down a notch.

Toxin is stronger than either Venom or Carnage but with no mental baggage to weigh him down. He has taken Spider-Man as a role model, and has chosen to be a force for good. I can see Toxin becoming a major player in the Marvel Universe.

Countdown to Infinite Crisis #1

As someone who is not an avid DC reader (Fables is the only monthly DC imprint title that I get), I thought I would get this special 80 page issue to see what all the hype was about.

To tell you the truth, I was totally lost from the beginning. I had no idea what was being talked about and was given no points of reference to find out. Other than that, the story did flow along very smoothly even with the multiple writers. The art of Rags Morales (chapter 1) and Ed Benes (chapter 2) also stood apart from the others. The story was quite good and the art on a whole was above average. My interest however was not sparked enough to make me want to pursue this event any further, due to my lack of knowledge of the recent events in the DC universe.
